Kik 9 February 2020: film frau verkleidet als mann The Stonegate Sword by Harry James is more than mere fantasy, it is a well written novel, a story of life which the author describes in such a way that you are living each moment with the main characters of the book, feeling their struggles, pain and other raw emotions which transverse the centuries/5(67). With elements of war and romance, Fox weaves a fine tale of gains and losses, gently guided by undertones of faith that, despite the Biblical quotes that grace the title of each chapter, never come across as beating the reader over /5. The Stonegate Sword is a tale of a redemption, of the rise of our hero, Donald, who later falls, and must spend the rest of the story rising above the shame of that fall. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So are these stories, for the most part, sentimental pap with little or no merit? Do you think that the sentence: ‘A kitten’s tongue tickles the inside of my heart’ has, standing there on its own, in all its figuraitve figuraitveness, any literary value? An interesting question. Every reader could be said to be missing something so i’m missing what’s required to appraciate most of these stories, many of them also prize winning, many ripping beautiful phrases out of well known literary masterpieces (Prufrock) to little effect other than annoyance, and with central conceits that don’t work (sould as an ice-cue one must keep cool and close by), magical realist flourishes that leave one cold, and ‘meanings’ with capital Ms that ring hollow. For example ‘The Bookamking Habits of Select Species’ doesn’t quite make snese, never mind work as a piece of fiction – though its pretentiosn to a Borges-kind-of-clever seems to have dazzled quote a few (thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of…) readers, as well as a host of reviewers. The title story ‘The Paper Menagerie’ (2011) is such a lovely story, so well crafted and affecting it’s strange that everything else could leave you feeling cold. ![]() ![]() ![]() Complications and twists keep the plot engaging and snappy. Riley and her friends navigate Los Angeles’ Koreatown and run-ins with dokkaebi and inmyeonjo with a frantic, upbeat energy. Exploring familial bonds, belonging, and community, this is a fast-paced urban fantasy drawing on Korean mythology. Feeling responsible for the calamity, Riley, along with her best friend, Emmett, will do whatever it takes to make things right, whether that means striking deals with fickle magical beings or considering the help of an ostracized magical clan. Unfortunately, their plan goes spectacularly wrong, fracturing Riley’s community and endangering Hattie. Struck by this unfairness, Hattie finds a spell that will share her magic with Riley. But because Riley is adopted and saram, or nonmagical, the other clans will not allow her to have an initiation ceremony when she turns 13 in a month. When she turns 13 in two days, Hattie will finally become a full member of the Gom clan, able to wield magic on her own. Riley Oh and her sister, Hattie, are typical Korean American girls except for one thing: They know magic is real. ![]() ![]() When a spell goes wrong, a girl sets out on a quest to save her sister. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My pet peeve is when authors play fast and loose with characters and established world facts in order to advance plots. The book would head in one direction for a while, then veer wildly in another. The characters were weak and hard to identify with, the plot seemed like something of a time past (yet wasn't), and the outcome of it all was ridiculous.
